    Common complaints of patients wishing to undergo otoplasty are that their ears are misshapen, too protruding or too large (macrotia). Protruding ears can be the result of the lack of development of the antihelix (the inward curving ridge of the upper ear). Ears can also protrude due to a deep cup, or concha, of the ear. Many people with protruding ears have inherited the feature from a parent.

    About Ear Surgery: The Procedure

    A customized otoplasty procedure will vary depending on the cosmetic deformity being corrected. Otoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that takes approximately 2 hours and is usually performed on both ears in order to enhance the symmetry and balance of the face. Dr. Tanna will make an incision behind the ear and remove skin and cartilage while also folding the ear cartilage back. Incisions are typically hidden on the back of the ear or within the creases of your ear. A natural ear shape is restored, creating balance and proportion between the ears and face. Otoplasty can be performed in the outpatient for either children and or adults. To determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, Dr. Tanna will examine your ears to determine placement, size, shape and symmetry, and discuss expectations.

    Ear Surgery for Children

    Many parents (some of whom experienced teasing as a child) bring their children to our New York plastic surgery office for cosmetic ear surgery. Children with overlarge or protruding ears can suffer. You, as a parent, can help your child have a happier life by arranging ear surgery with Dr. Tanna at his New York office. Children typically have this procedure under general anesthetic, as it is less stressful for the young. The first step is a consultation where we can meet your child, evaluate the ear structure, advise you of what surgery will entail, and answer all your questions and concerns.

    Not every person with protruding or overlarge ears had the benefit of surgery as a child, and come to us as an adult to resolve unsightly ears.     Earlobe Repair

    Patients with stretched earlobes or torn earlobes are good candidates for earlobe repair. Some people have earlobes that are torn or stretched from wearing heavy earrings. Earlobe abnormalities can also be caused by genetic factors, trauma to the ear, or surgical procedures such as skin cancer treatment.

    Dr. Tanna performs earlobe repair procedures on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia, at his New York office. Some patients had gauged piercings in the past, and are now left with large holes in the lobe that they no longer enjoy. Your earlobes can be restored to a natural appearance, with the large holes repaired and restored.
